There are essentially two types of spiral staircases: those that wrap around a central core or post, and those that run along the wall of a round room. In the case of the former, it is ideal for a situation where you have a very tight space within which to install a flight of stairs. Spirals cases are practical for tight spaces yet offer a real wow factor to your room. The stairs can be made out of just about any solid material: wood, iron, steel, even stone. A difficulty associated with these stairs is that you must taper to taper them in order to make the spiral.
Ideally, you want this to be uniform, thus easier to prepare ahead of time. However, depending on the space available, that may not be possible. There are several key factors to consider in this situation: the width of the tread (step), and the distance from the steps to the steps above. In the case of the tread, it’ll be narrower toward the centre, the tighter the spiral. If it’s too narrow, people won’t be able to walk on them, and they’ll be limited to only the outer end of the step.
As for the height of the steps, you want to ensure that people of average height can use the stairs without bumping their head on the stairs above them. If you want a spiral staircase but you fear some of these problems, gave us a call and we will see what we can do for you.If you’re doing a spiral staircase around the wall of a room, the room’s configuration and dimensions will control how you shape the treads and risers of the stairs. In some cases, that can mean each step will have to be customized. That’s no problem – just let is do the designing for you!
